•HISTORY AND CULTURE
ASSA is a dark stoned old ksar, founded on the 12th century by the Saint conqueror Sidi Yazza Ou Idha. We know that it is as from Assa that the religious and intellectual center foundator from the Drâa area became the cradle of several dynasties from the Cherifian kingdom.
The tomb of the precursory marabout Sidi Yazza Ou IHDA is always worshiped by the oasis inhabitants, Arabs, Berbers and Harratins. It is with the local marabout agreement that his son, Ali Ben Azza got settled at Tissint to found a zouïa,. Sidi Yazza Ou IHDA died in 727 from the Hegira of Assa.
The zaouïa buldings, today in the old ruined ksar, are still relatively well preserved (rehabilitation and restoring work in progress by the APDS : Southern provinces Promoting and Development Agency).
Above, hundreds of koubhas shows the tombs of 366 saints which have lived and tought in the zaouïa during almost a thousand years.
•CRAFT
On top of jewellery and traditional sewing, the Assa- Zag province is characterized by two main fields : the fossiliferous rocks and mat making.
The fossilized stones, converted, shaped with love and respect, the stone takes shapes by the craftman’s thought. From stone, inert material, will birth like this several useful and decorative objects ; fountains, tables, plates, shelves, dishes, clocks, ashtrays…
Basketry, from material called “smar” will birth like this several useful and decorativeobjects : bags, mat makers. A craft group, 11
cooperatives (228 co-operatives)
represents Assa craft activity. |

•ASSAOUI COOKING
Far from the fuss and closest to real life at Assa Zag, we go on to simme
some touajen, coucous, spit-roasted lamb… of all sorts in the traditional
household, humble or rich houses, nomads under their tents.
Every day we smell there the emanations full of promises of thousand and
one ways to taste the earth, sky and water good products. It is not mananymore that eat his environment but the environment that eats man.
•MOUSSEMS
Zouia of Assa moussem is a gathering not to be missed. People comes from everywhere in Morocco as well as the members of Ait Oussa tribe living abroad.
Cultural and religious activities take place as the tradition wants it for the prophet Mohamed’s birthday because the moussem coincides with his birthday celebration.
Ahouach dance, hassani poetry and amzighe music constitute the main artistic dish of these gatherings during which we can discover rites and customs of Assa population.
